Default Time-Date format choosable

As a foreign user of a software I always stumble a little over this MM/DD/YYYY-format not being used in all countries: At first glance I interpret 12/01/2009 as 12th january (instead of 1st december)...

I would prefer to make it optionally also DD/MM/YYYY (or DD-MM-YYYY or DD MMM yyyy (e.g. 12 jan 2009)) .

Probably very easy to implement...
